What a day! I got to the cabin today about 9am. I started out weeding both gardens. I am trying to stay on top of the weeds every couple of days. This way they will not get out of hand. I am trying a new weed control around the garden. Can you guess what it is? Vinegar! I am trying it out and I will keep you updated on how successful it is. After the weeding I moved on to planting more seeds. Today seeds included black beans, lettuce and onions. I never thought about onions having seeds until I bought them this week. They are pretty small but no where as tiny as the carrot seeds.
Once the gardens were taken care of I moved on to mowing the grass. Do you have any idea how many tanks of gas or how many hours it takes to mow 1.59 acres with a push mower???
Me either! If I ever finish I will be sure to let you know.
The dog hair seems to be keeping the deer and little rabbit foo foo out of the gardens so far. I hope it keeps working for their sakes. I put out some peanuts for the deer and what ever else wants to eat them. Things are really starting to grow. A lot of the tomato plants that we started inside are hanging in there so far. I knew we were going to loose a few and that is ok. We were able to get 14 new tomato plants from two of our local banks during customer appreciation days. I also got a moon pie and an RC Cola--sweet. I totally enjoy them by myself.
The fig tree that Melissa and I tried to kill is doing great. The peach tree seems to have lost most of the baby peaches. I noticed a few of them on the ground while I was mowing today. I think the deer might have eaten some of them. I will be happy if we get one or two this year. Next year it should have a lot of peaches. The apples are hanging on the tree so far. I can not wait to taste them.
My poor little dewberry bush had a mishap today. It just jumped up right in the path of the mower. The mower just grazed it a bit. I am sure it will be ok.
One very exciting thing did take place today at the cabin. I got to pick our first crop. Oh, yes I did! The spinach was just calling my name. I was able to pick enough for a small salad and have enough left over to put on pizza tomorrow. I can almost taste that pizza now---home made crust, home made sauce, fresh out of the garden spinach. I am making myself hungry :)
Let me know how the vinegar works!
